npub1v5r7vl0thvtdx69v888ysqw46sm9w8glxq674k4x07cg6q72sw8sa5as27 (npub1v5r…as27) A big part of the Fediverse users is strongly opposed to being indexed at all. Some instances even get in trouble because they run the Mastodon Elasticsearch option (like we do) to offer at least some reasonable search on their instance. I never understood why people have an issue with that, since their posts are public and why would you post publicliy when you don't want to be "found" in the Fediverse at all?
Sooner or later search engines will figure out how to properly index the Fediverse. What you propose is a public search engine that is focused on the Fediverse and controlled by the public? There is
https://fedi-search.com/ but it doesn't work very well and still relies on Google etc.
I think such a project can be done properly, perhaps even easily. But who is paying for it?
