Of course the context is unspecified which I do agree is a disappointment. Unfortunately there are far, far worse sins being committed by exam boards as a matter of course. It would be nice to have more research mathematicians involved in secondary education. The reality is that most teachers would struggle to understand your confusion.
In this case, the context should have been established by the lesson, where a pupil would have been practicing at simplifying similar expressions.
One learns to politely accept and brush aside these gaffes, maybe a little like when you are communicating with someone who doesn't have full command of the natural language you might be speaking in.
Moral of the story: come get involved in secondary maths education! We need you!
