I just remembered the absolutely visceral betrayal I felt as a kid reading The Lion Witch and Wardrobe. I was *into* the story, and then that slow dawning realisation of the weird christian propaganda that was layered through it.
It felt like getting a toothbrush while trick or treating, but like if the toothbrush was first disguised as a candy bar. And also the toothbrush was made in a way that would destroy your teeth. I was big mad.
(And again, I was a kid at the time being taken to catholic church on a semi regular basis, and in general had a very ambivalent stance on churchy things. It’s not like I was a militant atheist.)
