My guess would be they’re rescued / captive bred chicks of a ground-nesting species (so probably NZ: moreporks, maybe?), and the pipe tunnel is an entrance to an underground burrow like the one they would naturally be raised in.
Presumably they’re old enough to look after themselves now, or maybe mum would be added later and go “that was weird and this place looks different but I guess if the kids are all here then it must be ok”.
