it's true, whatsapp uses signal double ratchet E2EE also, that's why it, signal, and indeed simplex, (and keet) all have this thing of complication of multiple devices... whatsapp you have to link it to your phone (because signal protocol is based on mobile network as identifier)
indeed, earlier versions of this are part of Telegram as well and probably there is others as well... oh yes, Session, it also has the one device one account problem too
this is one of the things that nostr's architecture potentially can solve, especially in combination with outbox model and auth schemes
we are very early, and most nostr clients don't even properly handle DMs how they should be (using outbox/inbox) and there is potential for paid bouncing/caching services as well for nostr, so DMs go directly to your devices only, and your devices can sync to each other when they are online in this way
relay-in-the-client is a thing that will become more and more important
