We must distinguish between these statements:



I'm not convinced by Religion R.


There is no god.

The first is scientifically testable if Religion R makes statements about the physical world. (For example, it may tell creation stories that don't jibe with geological and fossil evidence.)

The second is not testable, because a hypothetical god could do anything at all, including things we can't understand, and even things that violate the laws of physics or logic.

Therefore "I don't subscribe to any religion I've ever heard about" can be a statement based on evidence and logic, if you've put the work in, but "there is no god" is a statement of faith.
