I remember chatting online to a load of older ex Post Office Telecoms/BT engineers, who pointed out nationalised PO/BT was quite profitable and innovative, but HM Treasury skimmed off profits that should have been used to develop public infrastructure and improve customer service/delivery times (also a lot of their resources were diverted by the Cold War to military installations).
