What stopped them actually seizing Berlin, or worse, wasn't the ICBMs but the 'battlefield' nuclear weapons. It is only in the present supposed absence of those now, following arms reduction, that Russia could even contemplate such an attack. A fortnight spent in trenches in FRG in the 80s contemplating such things convinces me of this. It is sad, but Europe must rearm.",
