In 1935, Ervin Bauer proposed a unique idea about how energy works in living things. He said that ATP—the energy molecule in our cells—doesn’t directly power the work our bodies do, like moving or thinking. Instead, it rebuilds a supply of high-energy, stable structures that our bodies use to get that work done. Bauer saw life as a kind of 'excited stable state,' not just a constant flow of energy creating order. He also suggested that when we do work, it creates a bit of chaos (or entropy) in our bodies. To fix this and keep our structure organized, we rely on sunlight and nutrients from food to restore that living order.
