As I read your response I thought perhaps the word "copyright" came about as a "right to copy" a text, as in when books were handwritten and thus rare, and someone allowed you to access their copy of a text and write out your own copy. They gave you a right to copy their text and may have even charged for that.
With the advent of the printing press and later computers, books and texts are no longer scarce and don't need to be handwritten to be copied. Should one have to pay $20 or $30 or whatever for a digital copy of a book when there is no labor involved in making that copy? (essentially no labor)
Today copyright laws seem to mainly grant a monopoly to publishers and authors for the purpose of making a profit rather than disseminating the ideas and content. Copyright laws actually hinder the spread of the content and ideas. I, too, would love to be paid for any of my written works or other creative productions, but I don't believe coercion by a gang calling itself the Governmentâ„¢ is the proper way to achieve that.
