That happened to me, too. There was a guy working at the food co-op who had long hair and wore pastels, but I've been around all kinds of punk/hippy/hipster people my entire adult life, so I assumed he just had an "alternative" style. I had to learn from the co-op blog that he was sad that people thought he was a man.
