I remember, while working at a different job, how the janitor told me through casual conversation over the course of my time there that he immigrated from Haiti as a medical doctor and realized he would have to re-do medical school all over again at an American University to be able to work as a doctor again. He was trying to do that but he couldn't get accepted at any school he applied to. Whenever white people tell me it is an advantage to apply for colleges as a Black person, I think of that-- how this doctor couldn't get into medical school.
