I gave away my 8bitdo (SN30Pro2) controller away to a friend, but remember it working on the Steam Deck. Maybe it's an Ubuntu issue, might work on something Arch based, like Manjaro. There's also Bazzite which is geared with gaming in mind. That one's Fedora based.
