Since I'm picky about both math and EE (as in, studied both for their own sake), I'd describe the relationship as follows:

Resistance, capacitance, inductance are all real values in the same sense as a and b are real values in the complex number "a+i*b".

Inductance (times the angular frequency) is the imaginary part of the complex number "impedance".
Well, one should take capacitance into account as well: the full imaginary part of the impedance is given by
2 pi f L - 1/(2 pi f C)
