Reason For Our Health Care Crisis: Government – OpEd

Compulsory spending on health care in the US consumes a greater share of health care spending than in most other developed countries. Government is more involved in health care spending and regulation in the US compared to other countries. Major health care programs in the US came into existence to solve problems created by previous government interventions. Medicare and Medicaid unleashed an enormous amount of new health care spending without an overall increase in health care. Medicaid exists because low-income families were priced out of the market for medical care due to regulations that limit the number of doctors and services. The tax subsidy for employer-provided health insurance encouraged over-insurance and over-consumption of care by middle- and upper-income families. Medicaid finances 20 percent of all health care spending in the US, but studies show that new enrollees in Medicaid increased their emergency room visits by 40 percent with no difference in their physical health. Obamacare largely offset the decrease in employer coverage with an increase in Medicaid enrollment, resulting in no increase in health care nationwide. Premiums doubled under Obamacare, and there has been a "race to the bottom" in denying high-quality care to patients most in need. The solution proposed is to give Medicaid and Medicare funds to beneficiaries in the form of cash and provide large Health Savings Accounts for employees.
