Interestingly the intended solution has a noticeable amount of slack, so the design could conceivably be tightened up enough to exclude at least that particular false solution.
Perhaps 3D printing is not the ideal manufacturing technique if such precision is required. But the pieces are geometrically simple, so I expect more precise techniques would be possible.
