Often, and I'm being honest here, it embarrasses me how much time I've spent on this story. How on earth is this worth it? Why do I believe there is anything in this novel to save?
Like the scene in Eudora Welty's Golden Apples where the boy lifeguard spends embarrassingly too much time to save a drowned girl. But save her he does.
