Intriguing developments within the Kansas Catholic realm: Pope Michael (David Bawden, 1959-2022), sometimes referred to as the "Kansas Pope," ascended to the papacy in 1990. Over the past 30 years, he maintained his papal See in Topeka from what he termed the "Vatican in Exile." Tragically, Pope Michael passed away on August 2, 2022. In July 29, 2023, Archbishop Rogelio del Rosario Martinez Jr (born 1970) was chosen as the next pontiff of the Vatican in Exile assuming the papal name Michael II.
