You'll notice that the Symbolics extension keys were all to the LEFT of the Z key. That made using them more like using the SHIFT key, easy to do while touch typing.
Modern keyboards require you to STOP typing and contort your hand to use the command key. I've seen many people use their thumb!
This implies a fundamentally different ergonomic flow to when Emacs was first introduced.
