Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized on Thursday what he said was a strategic attempt to defeat his country in Ukraine, emphasizing the existence of a struggle to shape a new world order in the post-Cold War era. Putin made the remarks at the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, a resort town on the Black Sea, a day after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. "We have reached a critical point," Putin said, stressing that "the previous world order is disappearing irreversibly, and we can say that it has already disappeared, and a new, irreversible struggle is underway to shape a new order." Putin also criticized Western calls for a strategic defeat of Russia, which possesses the largest nuclear arsenal, saying they show an excessive sense of adventure. He described the West's attempts to portray Russia as a defeated power since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and said NATO was "outdated." Putin emphasized that Russia does not consider Western civilization as an enemy, despite attempts to isolate Moscow. He noted that the world is changing, and many powerful countries do not want to isolate Russia. Putin stressed that "the world needs Russia, and no decisions by leaders in Washington or Brussels can change that." He also said that there is no point in trying to pressure Russia, but Moscow is always ready to negotiate. "There is no point in pressuring us. But we are always ready to negotiate with mutual respect and consideration of each other's legitimate interests. We invited everyone to that, and we invite all parties to that." Putin also said that some in the West dream of a world without Russia because they seek global dominance, but Russia has repeatedly stopped those who sought global dominance.
