I’m reminded of a final exam when I was at uni. The first part was a straightforward multiple choice/fill blank worksheet.
Second part, worth almost half the grade for the entire class, was to write a short “blue book” essay on a randomly assigned topic from that semester.
I was assigned to write on dadaism and immediately went into an anxiety blank.
So I did the only logical thing to pull myself together. I made something with my hands.
I filled the bluebook with nonsensical “dadaesque” syllable lines. Then tore each page into individual lines. Folded the bluebook cover into an envelope, placed the lines inside, and drew a heart on the front with the word exam inside. Recreating the OG dada manifesto’s "Dada is the heart of words" by doing the most absurd thing that came to mind in the moment with no explanation.
I was the only person who was assigned that topic who got full marks.
All that to say, I never really thought about the subject of dadaism again since then, but I’m realising that a lot of us mastonauts and fedizens are still manifesting dadaism here in reaction to the frankly absurd nature of our current reality.
So… 🥸😘
