Ellison is good but he can be a bit nihilistic (and, like many many sci fi authors of that era, could also be problematic). Have you read Vernor Vinge? Very much agree with the suggestions of James S.A. Corey, John Scalzi, Alastair Reynolds, Becky Chambers. Kim Stanley Robinson if you like long-ass slow books. Maybe also Greg Bear.
