I've seen fabulous images of this week's aurora. They show colour and scientifically-useful detail beyond what we can see with our eyes.

Yet, as ultra-sensitive camera images, they're way beyond the human experience, where the intensity is much more subdued.

The problem is that those less used to looking up come to expect too much of aurorae and can become disillusioned too readily.

There's a place for more representative imaging.
