Does ownCloud encrypt all data storage on-server? Or does it rely on Unix permissions etc to secure your server data?

answer: yes (optionally), but it doesn't protect the files *on* the server because the keys are on server and a server compromise can access them. it's meant for encrypting data that then gets offloaded to s3/gdrive/etc
