This serves as a terrible reminder that fedi *is* lacking in user choice and needs better systems to enable communication beyond what admins want people on their instance to see.

Ideally few instances would be using defederation anyway but because it's a thing that happens here, users *really* need a better way of keeping touch. There's no reason an admin should arbitrarily be allowed to decide "no actually, you can't speak to this person you've been having daily conversations with because I don't like something on their instance"

So, keep your friends close on other platforms. Clearly a lot of growth is needed before we can have guarantee of no loss of contact on here.
